Project overview

About this build.

African Gray carried out roof waterproofing and rainwater system remedial works at an MTN technical facility’s energy centre in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

The energy centre houses backup power equipment — generators, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and battery storage — that keeps the facility operating when the primary power supply is interrupted.

Roof defects and poor rainwater management exposed this equipment to the risk of water ingress. Working in an operationally sensitive environment, African Gray restored the roof’s waterproofing and corrected defects in the rainwater system to strengthen the building envelope around the backup power systems.

Services delivered

  • Critical Facility Maintenance
  • Waterproofing
  • Building Envelope Protection

Scope of works

  • Roof Waterproofing

Remedial waterproofing works to restore the roof’s protective barrier against water ingress.

  • Roof Defect Remediation

Treatment of affected roof areas to address defects compromising weatherproofing.

  • Rainwater System Remediation

Remedial works to the rainwater system to support effective runoff and reduce the risk of water accumulation and ingress.

  • Building Envelope Protection

Restoration of key protective elements safeguarding the internal environment housing the backup power systems.

  • Completion Inspection

Inspection of the treated areas to assess their condition and verify completion.

Operational value delivered

In a facility that supports telecommunications power resilience, protecting the building is part of protecting the equipment inside it.

The works addressed vulnerabilities in the roof and rainwater system, reducing the exposure of the backup power equipment to water-related risks — carried out with a clear understanding of what failure would mean for the site.

Project outcome

Trusted with the infrastructure that must not fail.

The energy centre roof is now sealed against water ingress, and its rainwater system channels runoff away from the building as intended — keeping the generators, UPS systems and batteries inside dry and ready to carry the site through a power interruption.

In environments like this, maintenance is more than correcting defects. It is a responsibility to protect the equipment and operations that depend on the building performing as intended.
